Norton St Public Artwork

Norton St Public Artwork consists of a suspended form with lighting, over Norton Street. The artwork is suspended by a series of catenary wires attached to steel poles on either side of the road. CSS was the Client engineering verifier for the structural design works, undertaken by other consultants.

Technical Innovations

As part of the reviews CSS was able to introduce design changes for the benefit of the project and to try and meet Client aspirations. CSS introduced the concept of a sleeved steel pole (smaller pole within a larger pole as a concept that has been adopted in the design. The aim was to reduce the overall pole diameter that would be required otherwise resulting in a non-preferred artistic solution.

Benefits to Client

As a result of the reviews undertaken by CSS, the Client was able to gain a level of confidence in the original design following some adjustments as a result of this review. CSS was also able to capture aspects of the design that posed a risk which either resulted in modifications, or an understanding of such risk for client management.

Deliverables to client

CSS undertook a design review and prepared a verification report which captured the outcomes of any findings. CSS undertook independent modelling of the poles and catenary structure (inclusive of the suspended artwork) as part of the reviews and review of design drawings.
