Alfred Street Pedestrian Bridge

City of Parramatta and Abergeldie Contractor Technical Structures advisor and temporary works designer for the 80m main span cable stayed arch bridge over the Parramatta River comprising a fabricated box arch with steel orthotropic plate deck and 90mm composite concrete topping.

CSS was the City of Parramatta and Abergeldie Contractor Technical Structures advisor and temporary works designer for the project providing technical expertise. Our team was also involved in the independent proof checking for the detailed design.

A beautiful pedestrian and cyclist bridge spanning over the Parramatta River, between James Ruse Drive and the Gasworks Bridge, the bridge boasts a magnificent steel arch which crosses the river at an oblique angle and supports a lightweight composite steel-concrete deck.

The team were very proud to be part of this project, allowing the community to enjoy and experience over 20km of off-road paths along the Parramatta River. The bridge will also provide accessible connection over the river directly to Parramatta Light Rail stops, schools and recreational opportunities.

Technical innovations achieved

The diagonal arch, the first of its kind in NSW, created specific challenges with large out-of-plane forces induced in the deck during construction and horizontal thrusts from the arch at the foundations. Advanced dynamic assessment of the structure led to the confirmation requirement of mass tuned dampers being included within the design of the deck system. Weld fatigue assessment for the hanger to arch connections was carried out leading to modifications in the design of the arch to hanger connection plates.

The team was engaged to act as the Abergeldie Technical Advisors for the construction phase work of the project along with completing the proof checking for the detailed design.  The main innovations during the construction phase were the modification of the construction methodology of the deck (fabricate the entire deck on land and install in one section using a jack up barge as temporary support) to eliminate the deck out of plane forces.

Benefits to the client

Confidence in the detailed design through an independent proof checking service and project knowledge to assist Abergeldie Contractors during construction ensuring City of Parramatta were delivered a safe, innovative, and aesthetically pleasing river crossing that the community can be proud of.
